Invitation for the Press: Opening of Tycho Brahe's Tomb

On Monday 15 November 2010 Tycho Brahe's tomb in Prague's Church of Our Lady before Týn will be opened by a team of researchers led by Middle Age archaeologist Jens Vellev from Aarhus University. The purpose of the opening is to perform a series of analyses in order to educate us about the world famous Danish astronomer's general condition of health and use of medicine. Additionally, an examination of possible textile remains and a measurement of the grave will also be performed. Beside archaeologists, the team of researchers will include anthropologists, doctors, chemists, textile conservators and antiquarians. The findings of the research team will be published in a scientific report.

The opening of the grave will take place on Monday 15 November 2010 at 10 a.m. Only journalists accredited by the Aarhus University or the Danish Embassy in Prague will be allowed to enter the Týn Church at this time. Due to the scientific research, the Church will be closed to the general public until 19 November 2010.

On Friday 19 November 2010 at 3 p.m., Tycho Brahe's remains will be returned to his tomb in the Týn Church. The reburial will take place during a ceremony officiated by His Excellency Mons. Dominik Duka, the Archbishop of Prague, in the presence of honorary guests, the local choir Notre Dame and renowned Danish Holmens Vocal Ensemble choir. The ceremony will be open to the public. We would like to ask the journalists to get their accreditation at contacts below.
